All of the AI tools demand something in return for their speed: Your data. Somewhere all the prompt, contract, spreadsheet, client list, must go to be processed. For several teams, however, it’s a third-party cloud that they cannot control. In addition, employees are responsible for putting sensitive material in different public tools without the help of staff, making it more difficult to spot. Zero data egress AI is meant to be able to solve that and it’s the basis of PFLabs.
What “Zero Data Egress” Actually Means
Egress is information that comes out of your environment. In AI, it’s more common than you’d think: when you type something into a hosted model, upload something to it, keep logs of it for the vendor to analyze, or send it back to them for product development. Zero data egress is that there is no data crossing your boundary. The model, agents and data are all hosted within infrastructure that you control – no need to trust anyone else’s servers.
Why Policy Promises Are Not Enough
Here are some of the guarantees that are made by many cloud AI vendors: We don’t train on your data, we delete it after a period of time, we meet a compliance standard. Such guarantees are important but they rely on the vendor’s ability to maintain them. Changes in terms, acquisitions, misconfigurations and so on. A policy will only last as long as the company that has it.
Architecture is different. There’s nothing to turn off, keep an eye on, or look forward to if there’s no way to get data out of a system. There is a difference between a promise and a design.
How PFLabs Keeps Data Inside Your Boundary
PFLabs is a sovereign AI platform that can be deployed within an environment that you control, on premise or in your own environment. For Enterprise teams, that is:
Data remains local: Documents, prompts and outputs remain inside your boundary and are not sent to an external service.
Controlled access: With single sign-on and role-based access control, an agent can access only what he or she is granted to access.
Complete audit track: All agents actions are recorded, allowing security and compliance teams to see what actions were taken, and who.
Predictable cost: No more surprises on the bill due to per-seat pricing, which is based on token-based billing.
In regulated work like legal work, finance work, healthcare or government work, the repercussions of a leak can be just as serious as a legal one as it can have a reputational impact.
Judging AI Product Maturity
Not all vendors with a “private” or “secure” AI are. Some vendors with a “private” or “secure” AI are not. When checking AI product maturity , question the marketing page in order to understand how the product is actually constructed:
What is privacy, if it’s not architectural, it’s contractual? Mature products set boundaries in design – boundaries besides terms of service.
Does it need to be connected to the Internet for it to operate? If there are features that break in isolation, then there’s some data that’s getting out.
Has governance been incorporated in? Access control, logging and approval flows should be built in and not as add-ons.
Do deployment procedures have good documentation? A well-developed vendor will be able to tell you about installation, updates and support within your network.
If it has passed these tests, then it has come from a demo to something that an enterprise could trust.
A Practical Example: The Proposal Generation Tool
Think about using a tool to generate ideas. To be meaningful, it must have your pricing models, your previous projects, your margins, and your competitive positioning—information that you don’t want to be the first to walk out of your business walls. The question is, a cloud based program is going to demand that you upload everything.
A zero data egress configuration is the same except that there is no movement of any of your internal documents, or systems, out of the boundary. Your team is still presented with draft proposals, pulled figures and formatted output, and that all-important proprietary data remains in place. Board Reports, Due Diligence Summaries, and Contract Reviews are all examples of tasks that involve AI and confidential information.
Questions to Ask Any AI Vendor
If you’re not sure of a site’s trustworthiness, ask:
- Where and how is data processed and stored, and who?
- What is going out of the environment (logs and telemetry)?
- Is it possible to deactivate the system from the vendor’s side, or does it operate without the vendor?
- How is access and actions monitored and tracked?
If there are clear, concise answers, it’s a good sign. Ambiguous ones are a warning!
The Bottom Line
AI holds the promise of revolutionising the way enterprise teams operate, but in order to do so, security teams must say “yes.” The difference with Zero data egress is from “how much risk are we taking?” to “there is no way the data can get out.” That’s what PFLabs does, and it’s a standard that we all should adhere to, whether we use PFLabs or not.
